UE5: INTERVENT – VR Police game with voice recognition

1–2 minutes

In this concept, you’ll step into the shoes of a negotiator tasked with defusing tense hostage situations. Using voice recognition, you must engage with the hostage-taker and persuade them to surrender peacefully, avoiding further conflict with the police.

Last year I had the idea to put voice recognition inside a videogame. And with VR this feeling of talking and being recognised in a conversation with virtual humans could be really engaging. I thought about a topic to test this and came up with a police-like intervention team where hostile hostage takers can be calmed or convinced to lay their weapons down and surrender. This is just a concept and I’m not a police officer nor do I know the right procedure on how to engage in situations like this. So the term “simulation” could be misleading, it’s a game.

Since this concept is not based on AI I abandoned the project because in the near future artificial intelligence systems will cover the part of conversations much more effectively. The volume and tone of your voice matter. Speak too softly or disrupt the environment, and you risk pushing the situation into an inevitable shooting conflict. Every life is valuable, and your ability to communicate effectively is your major tool.
